AT BAOSHAN

To a Farmer

Behind a butterfly, behind a buffalo
Better than life in a watch factory
Under the mountains and through the trees
Beneath white heavens and on gray hills

The water bubbles in pineapple red runnels
It is your wife knitting in the cotton patch
Your daughter washing your gumboots in the runnels
Have you eaten yet and where are you going?
